What Is The DASS-21 Test?

The DASS-21 (Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale) is a widely recognised self-reporting measure designed to assess the levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. Known for its reliability and ease of use, the DASS-21 provides a comprehensive evaluation that helps individuals understand their current emotional states based on 21 questions.

Goodsky is committed to supporting mental health and well-being, which is why we offer the DASS-21 Test free of charge and completely confidential to everyone on our website.

This reliable and valid tool assists individuals and healthcare providers in understanding the impact of emotional distress, enabling us to tailor our treatment plans. By using the DASS-21, we ensure each client receives the support and care they need to achieve lasting recovery and improved quality of life.

Components of the DASS-21 Test

The DASS-21 Test comprises three distinct scales, each designed to measure a specific aspect of emotional distress:

  1. Depression Scale: This scale evaluates symptoms such as dysphoria, hopelessness, devaluation of life, self-deprecation, lack of interest or involvement, anhedonia, and inertia. It helps identify feelings of sadness, loss of pleasure, and low energy levels.
  2. Anxiety Scale: This scale assesses autonomic arousal, skeletal muscle effects, situational anxiety, and the subjective experience of anxious affect. It measures physical symptoms like tension and nervousness, as well as the psychological impact of anxiety.
  3. Stress Scale: This scale focuses on difficulty relaxing, nervous arousal, and being easily upset or agitated. It also measures irritability, over-reactivity, and impatience, helping to identify symptoms of stress and how they affect daily life.

By evaluating these three components, the DASS-21 Test provides a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s emotional state, aiding in the development of effective treatment plans.

Why Goodsky Use Standardised Testing

At Goodsky, we use standardised screening tools such as the DASS-21 to help build a clearer picture of emotional load, stress patterns, and mood-related symptoms.

The DASS-21 measures levels of depression, anxiety, and stress, which often fluctuate in response to prolonged nervous system strain, unresolved life stressors, and cumulative emotional pressure. While this assessment can offer helpful insight, it is only one part of a much broader understanding of mental health.

Here’s how the DASS-21 is typically used in the context of care:

Initial Self-Reflection: This questionnaire allows you to reflect on your current emotional state and recognise patterns that may be affecting your wellbeing.

Clinical Context: Where appropriate, results may be considered alongside clinical interviews, history, and other assessments to inform a more complete understanding.

Monitoring Change: Repeating the DASS-21 at different stages can help identify shifts in stress and mood over time.

Goodsky is a personalised mental health retreat and outpatient program based in Australia. Our work focuses on addressing underlying contributors to depression, anxiety, and chronic stress through private, one-to-one care that supports nervous system regulation and long-term recovery.

The DASS-21 is provided for personal reflection and information only and is not a substitute for professional diagnosis or treatment.

Take The DASS-21 Test

The Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21) is a self-report tool designed to help you understand your current emotional state and how it may be affecting your mental well-being.

The test is straightforward to complete, taking only 5-10 minutes of your time. There are no right or wrong answers.  Do not spend too much time on any statement. At the end of the test, you will receive a clear score that can help guide your next steps for mental health care.

While the DASS-21 provides valuable insights into your emotional health, it should not be used alone for a diagnosis. A thorough assessment by a clinician is necessary to fully understand your mental health condition and to develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Your privacy is our primary consideration and your test is completely confidential.

Understanding Your Results

The table below provides a breakdown of the DASS-21 scores, helping you interpret your results for depression, anxiety, and stress. Each score falls into a specific category, indicating the severity of your symptoms.

While this table offers valuable insights into your emotional state, please remember that it is not a diagnostic tool. High scores on any of the scales should prompt further evaluation by a licensed mental health professional to ensure a comprehensive understanding of your mental health and appropriate treatment.
