What is PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder or injury is a diagnosis of an individual that has been unable to recover or heal after a traumatic event or set circumstances that they have been witness to.  PTSD presents as the inability to regulate emotions and mood with intense episodes of anxiety, depression, hyper-vigilance, re-occurring thoughts and highly sensitive to triggers such as smells, sounds, places and people.

Other symptoms of PTSD include:

  • withdrawal of social situations
  • nightmares or night terrors
  • flashbacks
  • fear
  • guilt
  • shame
  • regret
  • anger
  • grief
  • reliving events over and over
  • breakdown of relationships
  • insomnia
  • loss of meaning in life or direction

What causes PTSD

There are many factors as to what causes PTSD and to whom it may affect.  Some causes of PTSD can be:

  • Vehicular accidents
  • Workplace exposure such as police, paramedics, ER medical staff and military personnel
  • Workplace accidents
  • Violent crimes
  • Domestic violence
  • Sexual, verbal, physical assault

Causes of PTSD is any event that is traumatic or terrifying that an individual may have been part of or witnessed directly.

How to treat PTSD

Medication is typically the first step through a GP or Psychiatrist to assist with stabilisation and suppress mood.  However, there is so much more that can be done to treat PTSD without medication that will achieve a long term cure.
